Gun Found In Student's Bag At Hoffman Estates High School: Principal
The weapon was discovered following an altercation that ended with three students in custody, according to the school.
HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — A gun was found in a student’s bag following an altercation Friday morning at Hoffman Estates High School, according to the school’s principal.
The incident began during the first block of the school day when three students caused a disturbance in the hallway and were taken into police custody, Principal Mike Alther said in a letter to parents. The altercation stemmed from a social media conflict, Alther said.
During the follow-up investigation, officials found a gun in an unattended bag that belonged to one of the students who was arrested, according to Alther.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with police, school administration restricted student movement in the school for a short time,” Alther said in the letter. “The police have ascertained that there is no longer a concern for safety.”
Additional law enforcement was set to remain on campus throughout the day, according to Alther, and parents were asked to speak with students about communicating with teachers or administrators should they see or hear anything concerning. Alther also made note of the school’s online safety report form for reporting immediate concerns.
