Hersey High School Hires New Head Football Coach

Over the past four years, the John Hersey High School football program has forged a competitive image based on an aggressive, attacking style of defense led by Defensive Coordinator Joe Pardun. Next season, Pardun will take on greater responsibilities as the seventh head football coach at Hersey.

As both a classroom teacher and RTI (Response to Intervention) coordinator, Pardun has etched a reputation as a hard worker who can communicate with students at all ability levels. Whether it is working to get a struggling student back on track or conveying intricate math concepts, he has always had the patience and diligence to differentiate each student’s needs. He plans to bring these same attributes to the young men participating in the football program.

Concerning Pardun’s hiring, Hersey Athletic Director Steve Messer said, “Joe’s defense is fun to watch, because they play fast, physical, energetic football. We expect Joe to bring these qualities to the entire football program along with dedication, enthusiasm, and character.”

Pardun has paid his dues with the Hersey program for the past 14 years, the last nine as the varsity’s defensive coordinator.

“It’s an honor to be named a high school’s head football coach,” Pardun states, “but it is a privilege to do so at a school that I am so invested in and that has such a great tradition and high expectations for the success of its student athletes.”

Pardun believes that while there will be obstacles to overcome, he has a great opportunity because, “The program is in a great position, and we have a very strong foundation. We have a group of tough, gritty young men here and outstanding coaches who are committed to putting in the work necessary to take our program to the next level.”

With the help of Pardun, the other coaches, and determined players, Hersey made the state playoff for the first time in 10 years and won a share of the MSL East Championship for the first time in 37 years. While Pardun plans to make more frequent and deeper trips, there are other, important purposes.

“Our goal is to develop young men and leaders who understand the importance of what they do both on and off the field,” he said.
