Killer Remains At Large 1 Year After Palatine Man's Homicide: Cops

Police say they have conducted an "exhaustive" investigation over the last year and continue to follow leads in Jun Zhang's death.

PALATINE, IL — One year after Jun Zhang's homicide on Nov. 17, 2023, police say they are continuing to follow leads, but the Palatine man's killer remains at large. Zhang, 30, a graduate of Indiana University, was employed at Weichai America Corporation in Rolling Meadows at the time of his death.

Police said they have conducted an "exhaustive" investigation into Zhang's death and continue to seek the public's help. In January, the Palatine Police Department released images of a car involved in the crime.

At 6 p.m. Nov. 17, 2023, police responded to the 800 block of S. Plum Grove Road for a report of a person down and bleeding. Police found Zhang unresponsive with life-threatening injuries due to a gunshot wound on the front porch of a home. Zhang was pronounced dead at the scene. He died from a gunshot wound to the back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said Zhang was an only child who had emigrated from China "to pursue and education and citizenship." He had recently been engaged to be married at the time of his death.

Video footage of the suspect's car was found during the initial investigation. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark-colored SUV, possibly a 2017 to 2020 Nissan Rouge or Murano.
