Local Students Help Those in Need, Hold Fund-Raisers in May

Fund-raisers were held at Westgate, Ivy Hill and Patton elementary schools in May.

While school is officially out for the summer, some District 25 students spent May making a difference within their communities and helping those in need.

On May 17, students from Ivy Hill Elementary School, 2211 N Burke Drive, participated in a walk-a-thon to help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The school raised more than $6,200 for JDRF making the walk-a-thon one of the most successful kids walks organized by a school for JDRF, according to a District 25 news release.

JDRF is focused on curing, treating and preventing type 1 diabetes, according to the press release.

Westgate Elementary School, 500 S. Dwyer Ave., collected 30,000 coins — totaling $1,201.29 — as part of its Pennies for Puppies fund-raiser. The school also collected six copy boxes full of dog food, treats, toys and other supplies, according to the news release.

On May 18, the Westgate Student Council representative delivered the collection to Second City Rescue at their weekly adoption event.

Also in May, the Patton School, 1616 N Patton Ave., held their 6th annual Walkathon for Make-a-Wish. Three hundred students collected pledges prior to the May 18th Walkathon raising a total of $12,000, which will help fund a wish for two children who have a serious medical condition.

The student council presented a check to the Make-A-Wish Foundation on the last day of school. Arlington Heights Patch has more information on this fund-raiser as well as a video from the event
