Man Displays Handgun, Demands Work Be Done On Car: Des Plaines PD

Police said a 9mm Glock was recovered from the waistband of the Des Plaines man following the Tuesday evening incident.

DES PLAINES, IL — A 21-year-old Des Plaines man has been charged with a felony after he reportedly lifted his shirt and displayed a handgun while demanding his car get fixed at a local business. Sean Njoku, of the 1900 block of Webster Lane, was arrested Tuesday following the incident.

Njoku was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, as well as two misdemeanor charges of aggravated assault. Police said he is due in court for a detention hearing. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved the felony charge.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:46 p.m. at the business in the 1200 block of S. Elmhurst Road. Police responded to a customer/management dispute in which an irate customer, later identified as Njoku, was now in the parking lot and had a handgun on him. As officers responded to the area, they located Njoku.

While speaking with Njoku, police learned that he did have a firearm and then requested his driver's license. When run through the database, it was discovered Njoku had a valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card, but no Illinois Conceal Carry License. Njoku was taken into custody for this violation and a 9mm Glock was recovered from his waistband.

As police were checking the firearm, they found bullets in the magazine that was inserted into the gun, but there was no round in the chamber.

Police spoke to the victims at the business, who said Njoku came in to drop off his vehicle and began an argument over the required work that needed to be done on it. During the argument, Njoku reportedly lifted his shirt and displayed the handgun to the victims while demanding his car get fixed. Both victims said that they felt threatened by Njoku when he did that.

Police said during questioning at the police station, Njoku admitted to having the firearm on his person without a CCL and that he did display it to the victims.
