Mom Who Killed Disabled Daughter Granted Bail During Appeal

Bonnie Liltz, of Schaumburg, could be released from jail as soon as Thursday after an appellate court's unusual decision.

An appeals court granted bail for Bonnie Liltz, the Schaumburg woman serving a four-year sentence for killing her disabled daughter with a lethal dose of medication, while she waits for her conviction to be reviewed, the Daily Herald reports.

Liltz, 56, could be released as soon as Thursday, Aug. 25, according to the Herald. Liltz's father will be providing the $5,000 bail to have her release, the report added.

The court's decision Thursday to issue an appellate bond is an unusual move, and it requires the defendant to either prove he or she is in poor health or that he or she will win an appeal, the report stated. Since her sentencing in May, Liltz has been battling health issues related to pre-existing conditions, and her lawyer has been urging the courts to reduce her prison term.

In May, Liltz pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with feeding her 28-year-old daughter who suffered from cerebral palsy a deadly dose of pills through her food tube. Originally, Liltz had pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2015 case.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors recommended Liltz be given probation. But a judge sentenced the woman to four years in prison, calling her actions "a crime. Life is precious … even a life that is profoundly disabled."
