Obituary: Margaret Schlickman, Arlington Heights Affordable Housing Activist, Dies at 86

The longtime resident was the founding head of the Arlington Heights Housing Commission for 27 years.

Margaret Schlickman, a longtime Arlington Heights resident, affordable housing advocate for city and U.S. congressional staffer, died Friday, July 1, at a retirement community in Wheeling, according to Glueckert Funeral Home. She was 86.

Schlickman, who moved to Arlington Heights in the mid-1950s, was the founding chairwoman of the city's housing commission for 27 years before she retired in 2006, according to the Daily Herald. In that role, she helped create more housing for low- and moderate-income residents, the report added.

Beginning in the late 1970s, Schlickman was a legislative staffer for U.S. Sen. Charles Percy and then U.S. Rep. John Porter.

She is survived by her two sons—Andrew and Stephen—and two daughters—Mary Rogozinski and Monica Oliver.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 7, at Glueckert Funeral Home, 1520 N. Arlington Heights Road. A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 8, at St. James Church, 831 N. Arlington Heights Road.
