Talking Weed: Arlington Heights To Discuss Cannabis Sales Vote
The Arlington Heights Village Board voted 5-3 last November to prohibit sales in the village.
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Cannabis sales have been legal in Illinois for six months, generating record sales of nearly $48 million in June alone. Last November, the Village of Arlington Heights opted not to get in the marijuana business, at least not at that time. With more and more municipalities in the state opting to sell cannabis after seeing success in other areas, the Village is willing to reconsider the vote.
In six months since possession, use and retail sale of marijuana was legalized in Illinois, the state's dispensaries have sold over $239 million worth of merchandise.

The Village Board will discuss reconsidering its vote to prohibit sales of cannabis at a virtual Committee of the Whole meeting 7 p.m. Monday.
Last November, Mayor Tom Hayes argued that banning recreational pot sales would preserve Arlington Height's image as a family-oriented community. Some trustees who voted in favor of sales asked that a one-year pilot program be allowed, including Mary Beth Canty, who noted the results of the 2018 advisory ballot question when 57 percent of village residents were in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana in the state.

On the agenda for Monday's meeting, it states "the current Medical Cannabis Dispensary in town has indicated a continued interest in providing Adult Use Sales at their current location." It indicates staff is looking for direction from the Village Board on whether it wants to sustain the current prohibition on the sale of adult use cannabis, reconsider the zoning rules drafted last year to permit one or more adult use cannabis dispensaries, or seek additional information prior to making a decision.
Now that it's been 6 months since the sale of adult-use cannabis has been legal, the Village Board will have a discussion to reconsider its vote to prohibit sales of adult-use cannabis at a virtual Committee of the Whole meeting held at 7 p.m. on July 13. https://t.co/ZHyroCTsDT pic.twitter.com/na3bQULUBL
