Dear Neighbors,
This week Congress reached a bipartisan deal to reopen our government. This means that the hundreds of thousands of furloughed workers will get their jobs back, government agencies will begin working at full capacity once again, and we will protect the economy by avoiding a U.S. credit default.
In addition to working toward ending the shutdown, I was able to meet with children from St. Hubert’s school in Hoffman Estates. They had lots of great questions about Congress and we were able to visit the rotunda of the Cannon office building as well as one of the historic hearing rooms. It was great to see their smiling faces in Washington.

On Monday, WBEZ’s Morning Shift interviewed me on the local impact of the shutdown and how it is affecting families right here in the 8th District. I was able to shine a light on the very painful local cost of the shutdown on our businesses, schools and social service agencies.
On Wednesday, I attended a House Armed Services Committee briefing by the Department of Defense on terrorist threats to the US in North and East Africa.

On Thursday, I was happy to fly back home to Illinois, and attend the runway ribbon cutting ceremony at O’Hare International Airport. This new runway will help bring more jobs and economic activity to our district, and will help keep the Chicagoland area globally competitive.
Today, I hosted a grant workshop for the arts at Elgin Artspace Lofts. It was great to meet so many educators and non-profits who are trying to work with the Federal government to improve their offerings and programs.
I hope you had a great week.
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Duckworth
