Viator golf team in four-way tie going into ESCC championship

By Coach Jack Halpin

High drama and high school golf usually are not used in the same sentence, but that is exactly what will take place Tuesday in the ESCC Conference Championship at Old Orchard Country Club.  Four teams are tied with a match play record of 6-2: Notre Dame, Benet, Carmel and Saint Viator.

Viator found itself with a 4-2 record going into their final match with Benet at River Bend GC last week.  This was an absolute must-win situation for the Lions to have any chance to repeat as Conference champions.  Led by seniors Robert Renner (33), Ryan Fitzmaurice (38) and Connor O’Grady (39), along with junior Nick Carlson (40), Saint Viator had a season’s best 150 to Benet’s 160 to pull even with the Redwings, who were alone in first place going into the season finale.  The Viator win also helped Carmel and Notre Dame vault to the top of the conference standings.

At the Conference Championship, the team that is tied for first that wins the stroke play competition is assured of being the ESCC Champion.  In the last 10 years, Saint Viator has won 7 of the last 10 titles, with Carmel winning the other 3. Usually the title is determined by a single stroke, so this should be a really exciting tournament.
