Willy Wonka Candy Factory Chemical Spill Hospitalizes 12 Workers

Hazmat crews were called in, and the employees are expected to recover.

A chemical spill early Friday morning at an Itasca candy factory hospitalized 12 workers, WGN-TV reports.

Five gallons of lithium fluoride spilled at about 1:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, at the Willy Wonka Candy Factory, 1445 Norwood Ave., and a hazardous materials team was called in to handle the matter, the report stated.

The plant was evacuated, but 17 workers complained of respiratory issues, according to the TV station. Employees were allowed to return to the factory at around 4 a.m. after hazmat crews cleaned up the scene, the report stated.
