2nd Murder Conviction Gets Man 35 More Years In Prison

Police say the unrelated murders took place just 24 days apart.

AURORA, IL --- An Aurora man who is already serving 55 years in prison for the conviction of a 2005 murder and attempted murder will serve an additional 35 years for a second murder, both of which took place while he was a juvenile. Chavez K. Saulsberry, 29, was first sentenced in 2009 after he was convicted of killing Montrell Fluellen, 21, of Aurora, in a gang initiation, officials say. The second conviction comes from the 2005 murder of Michael Moore, 27, and the attempted murder of Moore's friend.

Authorities say that on Nov. 28, 2005, Moore was a passenger in a minivan with "fellow street gang members" who were "hunting for any street gang rivals to kill." The van reportedly pulled up alongside an Oldsmobile near the corner of E. Galena Boulevard and Smith Street and Saulsberry fired a 9mm gun into the car. Moore was hit multiple times and succumbed to his injuries; the other man in the car was hit, but survived.

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement, "This defendant at a young age chose a life of violence, preferring to threaten a community as a member of a criminal street gang instead of helping to build a community through a productive and positive life, and improve his own life through work and education. His poor decisions cost him his freedom."
