3 Displaced Following Apartment Fire in Aurora

The fire damaged a unit at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Greenwood Drive.

AURORA, IL - Unattended cooking is likely to blame for an apartment fire early Monday in Aurora.

Firefighters were called to the blaze reported in the 500 block of Greenwood Drive at 3:55 a.m. on Monday, and when they arrived, they found a two-story, four-unit apartment complex with heavy smoke showing from the front.

There were two residents in the unit where the fire started. One of the residents started to cook food in the oven and then fell asleep, fire officials said. The occupants were alerted by another resident who was knocking on the door.

It took 22 firefighters about an hour to fully extinguish the fire. No one was injured in the blaze and the apparent cause of the fire was due to unattended cooking.

Unit B, where the fire occurred, was deemed uninhabitable and the Red Cross and Victim Services were called to assist the three victims of the fire.

The other three units were not damaged by the fire and did not displace any other residents. The total fire dollar loss is estimated at $75,000.
