5 Back-To-School Events Will Be Hosted By Aurora City Council Members

AURORA, IL — For some Aurora students, school starts as soon as next week. In an effort to help local youth prepare for a new year of learning, Aurora City Council members are hosting five back-t0-school events in August.

The events are meant to be fun, educational and empowering, officials said. Take a look below at what's planned.

Free school supplies

• When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at Garfield Park, 825 Sheffer Road
• What: Ward 1 Alderman Emmanual Llamas and Latino Fraternities and Sororities will host the second-annual event with free school supplies, food, kids' activities, music and more.

Free backpacks and socks plus drive-thru food pantry

• When: Noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Calvary Church, 9S200 S. Route 59
• What: Ward 8 Alderwoman Patty Smith is collaborating with Calvary Church and the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry for their second-annual event that will give away free backpacks and socks. A drive-thru food pantry will also take place.

Ice Cream Social

• When: Noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 14 at McCarty Park, 350 E. Galena Blvd.
• What: Ward 2 Alderwoman Juany Garza is hosting the 17th-annual Ice Cream Social where anyone can come get free ice cream and tacos. A live mariachi band and clown show are also on the docket.

Drive-thru for free school supplies

• When: 4:30-7 p.m. Aug. 19 at Greene Field Park, 774 Illinois Ave.
• What: Alderman-at-Large Sherman Jenkins and the African American Men of Unity will host their 14th-annual giveaway. Children must be present to pick up free school supplies in a drive-thru format.

Free haircuts and school supplies

• When: 1-6 p.m. Aug. 21 at Dr. Martin Luther King Park, 42 N. Farnsworth Ave.
• What: Ward 7 Alderwoman Scheketa Hart-Burns, with support from several churches and organizations, will host the 35th-annual event with free school supplies, free haircuts and braiding, food, kids' activities, music and more.
