6 Residents Displaced After Detached Garage Catches Fire: Aurora FD
Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but the house was still deemed uninhabitable, officials said.
AURORA, IL — Six residents were displaced after a detached garage in the 1500 block of Sandy Lane caught fire Tuesday evening, Aurora Fire Department officials said.
A total of 25 personnel were dispatched at 5:09 p.m. to fight the fully involved garage fire. While en route, crews were informed that the blaze was growing and threatening a nearby residence, spokesperson Jim Levicki said in a news release.
All residents safely evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. Although crews were able to bring the fire under control within eight minutes of the first engine company's arrival, the fire damaged the home's electrical service, deeming the house uninhabitable. The garage was declared a total loss.

"Fires involving detached structures can quickly spread to nearby homes, especially when conditions allow the fire to grow before crews arrive," Deputy Chief Kevin Nickel said in a statement. "Calling 911 immediately and getting everyone to a safe location gives firefighters the best opportunity to contain a fire before it causes more significant damage."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
