Weather forecast:
1. Aurora Memorial Day Parade: Find Out Grand Marshal, Start Time (patch.com) — Aurora residents are getting ready for the city’s Memorial Day parade on May 25, led this year by longtime community member and Marine Corps veteran James “Jim” Butler as grand marshal. The parade steps off downtown at Benton and River streets at 10 a.m., featuring local veterans groups, school bands, and free parking across downtown for those who arrive early.
2. 2nd Shooting Reported In 1 Day In Aurora: Police (patch.com) — Aurora police are investigating two separate shootings that happened hours apart Friday, including one on Bonner Avenue where officers treated a 45-year-old man before he was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Detectives are still working both cases, including an earlier West Side shooting on West Downer Place, and are asking Aurora residents to share any tips with investigators or Crime Stoppers.
3. More Victims ID'd In Child Sexual Abuse Investigation Into Ex-Aurora Christian Schools Board Member: Police (patch.com) — Aurora residents are being urged to come forward as police say they’ve identified multiple additional men who report being abused as youths by former Aurora Christian Schools board member Michael Robert Herbert. Investigators, now working with the FBI because incidents allegedly span several jurisdictions, say Herbert faces 10 felony charges and remains jailed while the probe continues to focus on locations in and around Aurora.
4. Aurora apartment residents forced to relocate over asbestos concerns (fox32chicago.com) — Residents of the Fox Shore Apartments on North River Street in Aurora are being temporarily relocated after state inspectors found renovation work may have spread asbestos fibers through the building. Licensed crews will now decontaminate units and belongings under an Illinois EPA–approved plan, while the Attorney General’s Office reviews potential violations by the property owner. If you live nearby, expect an extended cleanup and legal scrutiny.
5. Daywatch: How a company abandoned 603 oil wells in Illinois (chicagotribune.com) — Aurora residents are exploring how they could legally recall a sitting mayor or at-large alderman, with some critics specifically targeting Mayor John Laesch. In a broader Chicago-focused newsletter, this local effort appears alongside statewide stories on nonprofit diversity rules, nuclear plant upgrades, immigration cases, and sports, but the recall discussion directly affects Aurora’s political future.
