Aurora Declares State Of Emergency: Coronavirus Crisis

Mayor Richard Irvin added that city hall will be closed to the public for two weeks.

AURORA, IL — Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin has declared a state of emergency in the city amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The declaration, which came late Monday, will take effect immediately, according to a news release.

In a statement, Irvin said, "These are challenging times, but I am confident we as a city, state and nation can come out of this stronger, wiser, and better. Let’s work together to preserve the public health, safety and welfare of our community."

City officials called the emergency declaration "a proactive measure to ensure public health and safety, to expedite the procurement of goods and services and to quickly enforce emergency planning decisions."

As a further precaution, Aurora City Hall will be closed to the public until April 1, effective Tuesday at 5 p.m. Most of City Hall's internal operations are set to continue as planned, with some employees working remotely.
