Aurora Hazmat Spill Dumps 100 Gallons Of Diesel Into Sewer System

Diesel fuel began to enter the Fox River via a storm sewer after a collision that took place in Aurora.

AURORA, IL — More than 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked into a sewer system in Aurora following a vehicle crash Tuesday. The spill was caused by a collision at the intersection of Galena Blvd. and Highland Ave. that punctured the saddle tank of a semi, according to fire officials. The EPA and Coast Guard were contacted as fuel began to leak into the Fox River.

Officials say drinking water was not contaminated and that there is no danger to the public after the spill.

The Aurora Fire Department Hazmat crew was able to quickly contain the spill and limit its spread into the river near 400 block of South River. More than two dozen responders, including firefighters from North Aurora and Montgomery, and a private environmental cleanup contractor, worked to contain and clean up the diesel spill, according to a news release.
