Aurora Officer Involved in Shooting During Chase; Suspect Shoots Himself

The incident happened Tuesday night in Autora.

A man and a police officer in Aurora exchanged gunfire during a foot pursuit Tuesday night before the suspect ended up shooting himself in the head, police said late Tuesday.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with a life threatening injury following the incident, according to a news release.

According to a preliminary investigation, at 8:41 p.m. Wednesday, a traffic stop was conducted at North Avenue and S. Fourth Street.

A male subject ran from the stopped vehicle with the officer pursuing him on foot, according to the news release.

During that foot pursuit the man who ran from the vehicle, and the officer, exchanged gunshots. The suspect was subsequently located in a backyard in the 200 block of S. LaSalle Street where he shot himself in the head.

He was taken to an Aurora hospital for initial treatment and airlifted to a suburban hospital with a life-threatening wound, police said.

A weapon was recovered from the scene. Nothing else and no one else apparently hit by gunfire or injured.

The Illinois State Police will be handling the investigation.

More information is expected to be released on Wednesday.
