Aurora Police Officer Faces Online Harassment Charge

He is alleged to have posted a photo on Instagram of a woman and a message calling her a "derogatory sexual slur."

AURORA, IL -- An Aurora police officer is due in court Tuesday, facing a criminal charge of electronic harassment. The charge is a class B misdemeanor.

Jonathan Olsen, 37, of the 200 block of Lineas Lane in Geneva, has been serving in the department since 2006, the Aurora Beacon-News reported. He is being accused of posting to his Instagram account a picture of a female, "along with a message calling her a derogatory sexual slur," the complaint said, according to the Beacon-News.

Olsen was suspended for 10 days in May for unauthorized use of records as part of an internal police investigation. It is unknown at this point whether the two investigations are related. He is currently on regular duty.

Olsen's defense attorney did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.

Two months before the Instagram post, the Sugar Grove Police Department reported to Aurora's Office of Professional Standards that Olsen was on a list of suspects in several alleged incidents of harassment.

The Beacon-News reported that disciplinary records say someone at the Aurora Police Department ran a particular name through LEADS, the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System, two times in January.

In a separate incident, records show that Olsen "may have improperly accessed a person's information through the department's system," the Beacon-News said.

Olsen's 10-day suspension, for violating general orders for confidential information and/or unauthorized use of records, ended on June 6
