Aurora Woman Accused of Abusing 6-Week-Old Baby

The woman caused possible life-threatening injuries to the young baby, police said. The woman and the infant are related.

AURORA, IL - A 24-year-old Aurora woman faces felony charges for allegedly abusing a 6-week-old baby, causing potentially life-threatening injuries.

Chantriese L. Phillips, of the 1600 block of Plum Street in Aurora, is charged with two counts of aggravated battery and a single count of aggravated domestic battery. One of the aggravated battery counts is a Class-X charge, which calls for enhanced sentencing if she is convicted, according to an Aurora Police Department press release.

Phillips, who police said was related to the infant, was arrested Wednesday following a police investigation into the abuse allegations. A relative of the infant and Phillips who lives in Oswego called an ambulance on April 13 when the baby showed signs of seizures, police said. The relative was caring for the child at the time of the incident.

Once the infant was examined, doctors found numerous injuries consistent with child abuse. The baby was then transferred to a Chicago hospital where the child continues to be treated for trauma to its head, brain, and body, according to the news release.

Phillips and the infant are related but because of the child's age, and since the baby is a crime victim, police were not elaborating further on their relationship.

Phillips bond was set at $250,000 Thursday and she been transferred to the Kane County Correctional Center in St. Charles with a pending court date, according to the news release.

The investigation is continuing and further charges against Phillips have not been ruled out.
