Aurora Woman Wins $4M Settlement Against Wells Fargo

A metal door closer detached as she was entering the building and hit her in the head, causing damage to her neck.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora woman is being awarded a $4 million settlement for injuries sustained when a metal door closer detached from the door of a Wells Fargo office, according to a news release from her law firm.

Amy Skinger, 42, was entering a Wells Fargo mortgage lender office on Fox Valley Road in Aurora on May 14, 2012, "when without warning a metal door closer unit detached, swung and struck her in the head, knocking to her knees, and severely aggravating her pre-existing spondylosis," according to the press release from Clifford Law Offices, the Daily Herald reported.

Spondylosis is "age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck," according to the Mayo Clinic. Clifford Law Offices said in the press release that Skinger required "both a posterior and anterior cervical fusion" in two disks in her neck.

The Daily Herald reported the law firm as saying this verdict was a record in DuPage County for a single plaintiff in a non-medical malpractice case.

After a two-week trial, the jury returned the verdict in two hours, finding Wells Fargo 80 percent responsible for the accident and the property owner 20 percent responsible.
