Benavides STEAM Academy Student Wins Statewide Art Competition

AURORA, IL — March is “Youth Art Month”, a national program that is organized by the Council for Art Education. It celebrates visual arts for grades K – 12, emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.

This year’s theme was “Healing Through Color” and students throughout Illinois submitted their artwork in an art competition. One of our very own EASD 131 students Gael Alfaro-Reynaga, a first grader at Benavides STEAM Academy, won the statewide Elementary Grade Level National Art Education Association Art Competition!

The Board of Education recognized Alfaro-Reynaga for this incredible accomplishment at the March 3, 2025 meeting along with EASD 131 art teacher Bonny Ramirez who was instrumental in preparing students to participate in this statewide competition.

As a result, both are receiving art supplies from the Council for Art Education and Alfaro-Reynaga’s artwork will be displayed at the National Art Education Association Convention which will be held this year in Kentucky from March 20-22.
