Brutal Knife Attack: Aurora Man Convicted In Vicious Stabbing

Authorities say the 35-year-old continued stabbing the victim even after he attempted to flee in a vehicle.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora man faces at least 10 years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder in a vicious December 2016 knife attack. Shaun Ramirez, 35, was on parole for a 2014 aggravated battery conviction at the time of the attack. On Thursday, a Kane County jury also found him guilty of armed violence.

During his trial, Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Lori Anderson and Matthew Rodgers presented evidence that Ramirez attacked another man as the two were talking outside Ramirez's home in the 1300 block of North Glen Circle at about 7 p.m. Dec. 21, 2016. Ramirez, who was drunk, punched the victim in the mouth, then, as he began to walk away, slashed him on the left side of his body with a knife, authorities said.

The victim wrestled Ramirez to the ground and the two men exchanged punches before the victim stood and told Ramirez the fight was over before walking to a friend's car, getting inside and closing the door. Ramirez then ran to the car, reached through the open passenger-side window and began to stab the victim in the face and throat, prosecutors said.

Kane County State's Attorney Joseph McMahon said Ramirez then grabbed the victim’s right arm and "began to saw at it, cutting a large chunk from the bone and leaving a large hole in the arm." At that point, the driver left the scene, driving the victim to a hospital, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries.

Police said Ramirez initially fled the scene, but returned home just after midnight, when officers were waiting to arrest him. He's been in custody since his arrest in lieu of $750,000 bail. The victim told police he believed Ramirez was trying to kill him, prosecutors said in a news release. The victim suffered significant injuries to his right arm, including detached tendons. Officials said he continues to recover, but the attack likely caused permanent damage.

Sentencing is scheduled for Oct 26. Ramirez faces between 10 and 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. In addition to the 2014 aggravated battery conviction, Ramirez has multiple prior convictions for violent offenses and has served at least three prior prison terms.

“To describe this attack as ‘violent’ seems inadequate. It was vicious, chilling and almost deadly," McMahon said. "By all accounts this victim is fortunate to have survived. Mr. Ramirez is dangerous and belongs back in prison."
