Celebratory New Year's Gunshots Hit Man Sleeping In Aurora Home

Police say the sleeping man was hit in the abdomen and taken to the hospital in serious condition.

AURORA, IL — An Aurora man is in serious condition after he was hit with celebratory New Year's Eve gunfire while he slept inside his home in the 1600 block of Fredericksburg Lane. Charges were filed against Miguel Reyes, 48, in connection with the incident.

According to police, the victim woke up just after midnight after a bullet tore through his home and hit him in the abdomen. The man told police that he noticed a bullet hole in his wall when he awoke.

Police say they traced the trajectory of the bullet to somewhere in the 2300 block of Grand Pointe Trail, where they found at least 30 shell casings outside a home. Police searched the house and cars at the home and say they found a handgun inside one of the cars.

Police then questioned Reyes and say he admitted to firing multiple rounds from his gun around midnight to ring in the New Year.

Reyes was charged with felony counts of reckless discharge and reckless conduct.
