City, Food Bank Offer Free Meals To Aurora Kids Amid Pandemic

Aurora school districts are also continuing their food-distribution efforts to support students and their families through the summer.

AURORA, IL — Parents in Aurora can pick up free meals for their children twice a week after the city partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank for a “Meals on the Move” program. Aurora school districts are also continuing their food-drive efforts to help parents and keep students fed throughout the summer amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The city’s program has two pick-ups each week — 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays at the Phillips Park Visitor Center, 1000 Ray Moses Dr.; and 12-1:30 p.m. Thursdays at McCarty Park, 350 E. Galena Boulevard, according to a news release. The program will be distributing free meals to parents with children 18 and under, the release states.

West Aurora School District 129 is set to distribute meals from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday, through Aug. 7, at seven locations: Greenman, Hill, McCleery and Nicholson elementary schools; Jewel and Washington middle schools; and West Aurora High School, the release states.

East Aurora School District 131 hands out meals four days each week, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Thursday at four of its schools: Benavides STEAM Academy, Allen Elementary, Cowherd Middle School and East Aurora High School. District 131 has given more than 200,000 meals to students since launching its food-distribution efforts in mid-March after the outbreak of the coronavirus in Illinois. The district will also continue distributing meals along its bus routes.

Aurorans Pray For Justice, Healing After Weeks Of Protests

Officials from Indian Prairie School District 204 are providing breakfast and lunch to students throughout the summer. Parents can pick up a “drive-and-go” bag each morning at any of the district’s 20-plus elementary schools. Parents are asked to fill out a form on the district’s website so officials can plan how many bags to send to each location.

Community School District 308 has extended its meal-distribution program through the end of June. Officials will distribute two days of meals on Mondays and three days of meals on Wednesdays. Parents can pick up meals from 8:30-10 a.m. at Oswego High School, according to the district’s website.
