Convicted Felon In Custody After Narcotics, Firearms Found In Search Warrant, Traffic Stop: Aurora Police

AURORA, IL — A convicted felon was taken into custody Tuesday following a search warrant execution and traffic stop in which Aurora police recovered firearms and narcotics, officials said Thursday.

As part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, Special Operations Group investigators executed a search warrant at about 5 p.m. at a residence in the 300 block of Evans Avenue. The Community Oriented Policing Unit and K9 officers assisted.

Before the warrant was served, police saw the suspect, 29-year-old Hector C. Barillas, leaving the residence. Officers conducted a traffic stop and took him into custody without incident, according to a news release.

During the traffic stop, police recovered a stolen Glock 19 handgun loaded with a 30-round extended magazine, as well as suspected cocaine, cannabis, Xanax and Adderall, officials said.

In the subsequent search of his residence, police say investigators found an Archangel .22-caliber rifle, more suspected narcotics, multiple digital scales and other drug-related paraphernalia often used to distribute illicit drugs.

Barillas was also wanted on an unrelated warrant for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The Kane County State's Attorney's Office approved the following felony charges against Barillas:

• Armed Violence — Category I weapon
• Manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance — cocaine, less than 15 grams
• Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
• Two counts of felon in possession of a weapon
• Three counts of possession of a controlled substance

As of Thursday, Barillas remains in custody at the Kane County jail, pending further court proceedings.

"This case highlights the ongoing efforts of our Special Operations Group and partner units to disrupt illegal narcotics activity and remove dangerous weapons from our community," Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement. "The recovery of multiple firearms, including a stolen handgun, underscores the importance of these proactive investigations."
