Elizabeth Caparelli-Ruff is the new director of special education.

Elizabeth brings over fifteen years of educational experience, including 13 years working with special education populations and departmental oversight.

Ms. Ruff has led special education departments in both public and private settings. In her most recent position, she managed private day placement for students and their families. In her previous roles, she has served as director of special education and school principal, managing up to 600 Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s), and more than 100 out-of-district placements in private and non-public facilities. She was responsible for the oversight of the transition program with the department of rehabilitation services.

Ms. Caparelli Ruff has a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in business administration, and a master’s degree from Lewis University.

Maya Raab is the new assistant director of special education.

Ms. Raab has worked in District 131 for eight years. She served East Aurora High School students and families as a special education teacher until her promotion to coordinator, in 2018. In her role as coordinator, Maya led various levels of special education eligibility, including the eligibility process, manifestation determination reviews, change of placement, and termination of services. Maya disaggregated data to guide teachers and support them with various levels of intervention strategies.

Ms. Raab has a bachelor’s degree from the College of St. Catherine; a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and a second master’s from North Central College in educational leadership.
