AURORA, IL — Firefighters rescued a dog trapped in a house on fire Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A total of 24 firefighters were called at 2:47 p.m. to the structure fire in the 2900 block of Fairmont Avenue after a neighbor called 911 to report the fire. When they arrived, crews found "heavy smoke" showing from a two-story, single-family house. Fire was coming out of a window on the first floor near the back of the property, officials said.

The house was unoccupied when the fire broke out except for a dog, who officials said was saved in good condition. A woman and her 13-year-old daughter, the house's residents, arrived about 20 minutes into the incident.

After putting out the flames, crews remained on the scene to search for and extinguish hot spots for about an hour.

The house sustained heavy heat and smoke damage and was deemed uninhabitable. Officials said the residents did not need assistance from Victim Services or the Red Cross as they will be staying with other family members.
