Dear Families of East Aurora,

Today is Mexican Independence Day, the 211th anniversary of “El Grito de Dolores” (Cry of Dolores) and the legendary speech that spurred the Mexican population to revolt against Spanish rule. ¡Viva México!

Also this month, East Aurora School District 131 joins our community and the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The month-long celebration from September 15 to October 15 allows us to celebrate and honor the history, culture, and influence of past generations from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Observing Hispanic Heritage Month is an ideal opportunity for our school district and school communities to recognize and support the amazing work Latinos have done and continue to do in helping our community grow.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, our students will have additional classroom opportunities to learn more about Hispanic Americans’ experiences, culture, and contributions that have shaped Latino and American history.

All families can find ways to celebrate Hispanic culture, such as supporting Hispanic-owned businesses, cooking or enjoying Hispanic foods, listening to music from different places in Latin America, or visiting online museums of Hispanic art—as a few examples.

While this year’s month-long celebration will again look different because of the global pandemic, I do hope you find ways to celebrate. The City of Aurora will be hosting online and in-person events designed to celebrate the heritage, impact, and resilience of Aurora’s Latinx community. You can find these on the City website.

On behalf of our Board of Education and from all of us at East Aurora School District 131: Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer Norrell, Superintendent
East Aurora School District 131
