East Aurora School District 131 initiated a Special Olympics program during the 2017-18 school year. In our first year the program included 16 athletes from East Aurora High School and Simmons Middle School. The second year, 2018-19, expanded to six Special Education/Life Skills/Transition programs within four schools and included 45 athletes. As we start our third year, we continue to expand and grow.
Special Olympics brings comradery and togetherness for the Special Education community in District 131. Many came to support our athletes at the Regional and State events. Supporters included the following: parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, neighbors and friends. District 131 also had administration and teacher support from the schools involved. The smiles on the students’ faces were worth every penny and every hour spent in preparation.
