Fire Breaks Out In 5-Story Apartment Building On Illinois Avenue: PD

AURORA, IL — An apartment unit in the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue, off the Fox River, caught fire Saturday afternoon, according to officials at the fire department.

Firefighters were dispatched to the five-story building at 4:40 p.m. Saturday, where they found fire and smoke showing from a unit on the fourth floor, officials said. After Truck Company crews forced their way into the apartment, Engine Company firefighters hooked hose lines up to the standpipe and put out the fire.

Additional crews searched adjacent apartments on the fourth and fifth floors as well as stairwells for fire extension, but no other unit was damaged, officials said. Firefighters said they did not find any victims as a result of the fire either.

The resident of the apartment was not home at the time of the fire, according to officials. The unit was deemed uninhabitable, but the tenant had somewhere to stay and did not need help from Red Cross or Victim Services, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

Officials posted on Facebook alerting the community of the incident and said the fire was extinguished by 6:20 p.m. A portion of Illinois Avenue was closed to traffic while crews worked, according to the Aurora Police Department.
