Giving Tuesday Now: Kane Co. Orgs Seek Support Amid Coronavirus

Giving Tuesday Now is expected to give local organizations a much-needed boost as they work to help people in need.

KANE COUNTY, IL — Local businesses and organizations throughout Kane County are participating in Giving Tuesday Now on May 5 due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to the global initiative's website, #GivingTuesdayNow is a new worldwide day of giving and unity happening Tuesday, May 5, in addition to the regularly scheduled Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1 "as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19."

Northern Illinois Food Bank
As always, the Northern Illinois Food Bank is collecting monetary donations to support its efforts to keep its network of 800 food pantries stocked and ready to serve those in need. Donations to the Geneva-based organization can be matched through the NKC Foundation and Cole-Crone Foundation, meaning every $1 donated could help provide $16 worth of nutritious groceries at this critical time, according to the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s website.

Fox Valley United Way

The Fox Valley United Way is raising money through its Coronavirus Relief Fund to support social service agencies in Kane and Kendall counties. The fund has already helped out more than a dozen local organizations, including the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry, Hesed House, Lazarus House, Salvation Army Tri-City Corps, Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, Quad County Urban League.

Donations to the United Way’s Fox Valley Coronavirus Relief Fund will be combined with the Fox Valley Grantmakers COVID-19 Response Fund, according to the Fox Valley United Way’s website. The organization is working with the Aurora Women’s Empowerment Foundation, Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, Dunham Fund and INC Board on its efforts to respond to the coronavirus crisis.

The Venue - Aurora

The Venue, located at 21 S. Broadway in Aurora, has launched a Giving Tuesday Now fundraiser to support local musicians. Donations made May 5 will be shared with local musicians who have performed or were scheduled to perform at The Venue, according to the fundraiser page. The Venue is the home of the Fox Valley Music Foundation.

Association for Individual Development

The Association for Individual Development, located at 309 New Indian Trail Court in Aurora, is partnering with the Coleman Foundation to match all donations of up to $25,000 from private individuals between through June 1.

Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity

The Fox Valley Habitat for Humanity is seeking donations “to help us continue our mission of offering a hand up” to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic. Those interested in making a donation can do so by texting HOMES to 243725.

Mutual Ground

Mutual Ground is an Aurora-based organization that provides victim services and shelter for people in need in Kane and Kendall counties. The organization is asking for support in the form of donations of money and meals, as well as purchases of items on its wish lists.

Paramount Theatre

With all performances postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Paramount Theatre in Aurora is seeking support to maintain its programs. For more information, visit the Paramoutn Theatre’s website.

Suicide Prevention Services of America

Suicide Prevention Services of America, based in Batavia, is asking for help to to continue providing critical counseling and support services to people seeking mental health help amid the coronavirus pandemic. Most SPS workers are volunteers and the organization is dependent on donations to continue operating, according to its fundraising page.

Steel Beam Theatre Company

The Steel Beam Theatre Company, an award-winning professional theater in St. Charles, is asking for donations to support its staff and continue its education programs when it can reopen.

The Salvation Army Aurora Corps

Located at 437 E. Galena on Aurora’s eastside, The Salvation Army Aurora Corps has served Aurora and surrounding communities for over 130 years.

The Aurora Corps provides emergency housing and rent assistance, youth programs and holds a twice-weekly Food Pantry at its community center. Last year, The Salvation Army Aurora Corps helped provide food to 5595 local families. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, families visiting the Corps’ Food Pantry has doubled since the start of the pandemic. The Salvation Army Aurora Corps is seeking donations to help with increased demand of its food pantry and continued operating costs.
