The Joint Aurora-Orchard Road wants you to know that walking on ice is NO joke.

Winter Safety tips

Did you know that the famous diet doctor, Doctor Robert Atkins died due to a fall on the ice? Totally true, it wasn't the bacon it was the ice outside his Manhattan office!

Approximately 16,000 people die each year due to a slip and fall injury. Although the exact number related to ice is not specified, we do know that ice makes for dangerous conditions.

Here are helpful hints that can help reduce the risk of falling when slippery conditions exist:
1. Wear boots or overshoes with soles. Avoid walking in shoes that have smooth surfaces, which increase the risk of slipping. Those high heels should probably wait until spring.
2. Pay attention to where you are walking! Texting and walking isn’t safe any day of the week, but it’s downright foolish when it’s icy!
3. Walk cautiously. Your arms help keep you balanced, so keep hands out of pockets and avoid carrying heavy loads that may cause you to become off balance. Did you know that putting your hands in your pocket changes your center of gravity and makes you more likely to fall?
4. When you step on icy areas, take short, shuffling steps. It’s not glamourous but it helps.
6. Remove snow immediately before it becomes packed or turns to ice. Keep your porch stoops, steps, walks and driveways free of ice by frequently applying ice melting granules. This is the best way to prevent formation of dangerous ice patches. Waiting for it to melt can sometimes take days!
