Two Vacant Aurora Schools Will Be Turned Into Apartment Complexes

AURORA, IL — Two vacant elementary schools will be turned into affordable housing complexes with 47 units available between the two, officials announced Sunday evening.

Todd and Lincoln elementary schools, both formerly operated by West Aurora School District 129, will be transformed into the new Fox Valley Apartments, a mix of studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

Each building will be equipped with a community room, laundry facility, and a lounge with computers and books. In addition to these offerings, Lincoln School will also have a fitness center in the existing gym.

Units will be reserved for families with certain incomes. While it will depend on family size, the apartments will be reserved for tenants making between $18,000 up to $63,000 a year, officials said.

Not only will the current structures be turned into apartments, but new ones will also be built as part of the project, city officials said. Todd School, at 100 Oak Ave., will have 11 apartments, while Lincoln School, at 641 S. Lake St., will have 14 apartments. A new building will be constructed adjacent to Lincoln School and will house 22 apartments.

Todd School will also be the home of a new medical facility operated by VNA Health Care and will serve District 129 families.

A physician will lead the facility by serving as medical director, and licensed, registered or certified health professionals will be employed there, according to the announcement. At the facility, people will be able to get primary care medical services, mental health help and health screenings.
