Updated Ordinance Allows City To Fine Residents Using Fireworks
Ahead of Independence Day, the city started a campaign where residents will be hit with fines up to $1,000 for using fireworks illegally.

AURORA, IL — Aurora's city code bans the sale, possession and storage of fireworks, and city officials are planning to fine locals who light 'em up around the 4th of July weekend.
Aurora City Council unanimously approved a revised ordinance — City Code Sec. 29-30 — to help eliminate the "consistent illegal use of fireworks" in Aurora.
The code reads: "No person shall sell, offer for sale, give, store, possess, explode, fire, ignite, discharge, or otherwise use display fireworks, flame effects, consumer fireworks or any other pyrotechnic prohibited by law or this code except as authorized by this code."

Generally, this happens before Independence Day and continues throughout the summer. Now, using fireworks could result in hefty fines.
The city launched a campaign, titled "If you light it, we will write it," where violates can be issued fines up to $1,000. Repeat offenders could face even higher penalties, officials said. Staff did not specify how long the campaign will last but said it will take place "in preparation for the Fourth of July weekend and the following weeks."

Under the updated ordinance, the owners of property on which illegal fireworks are used could also incur fines, and liens can be placed on the property where offenses are repeated, officials said.
People can report illegal fireworks usage through the city's website or by calling Aurora's Customer Service Center at 630-299-4636. If a situation threatens people's safety or property, officials said residents should call 911.
