Funeral Services Set for Barrington Boy, 12, Who Died in Bicycle Accident: UPDATE

Funeral services have been set for a 12-year-old Barrington boy who died following a bicycle accident over the weekend.

A visitation for Jonathan “Jak” Kallas, a seventh grade student at Station Middle School in Barrington, will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. at Village Church of Barrington, 1600 E. Main Street in Barrington. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the church and burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.

Authorities said Kallas suffered a severe injury while riding his bicycle in the 400 block of North Lake Zurich Road in Barrington at about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday.

A GoFundMe page set up by Kevin Kallas, Jak’s father, has brought in over $27,000 in past 15 hours. The money will help the local family pay for medical expenses and funeral costs.

Kevin Kallas wrote Jak was biking with friends and “being the adventurous boy we knew him to be” when the accident occurred. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and died a “few short hours later,” according to Kevin Kallas.

Police have determined the death was accidental. An autopsy revealed Kallas died of multiple injuries from falling off a bike, according to the Daily Herald.

Kallas played FCX soccer and was very active in the Village Church’s youth group, according to his obituary. The 12-year-old boy “lived life to the fullest,” according to his obituary.

Jak is survived by his parents, Kevin and Joy Kallas and his younger sisters, Rebekah and Amelia.

Extra counselors and social workers are expected to be on hand at Barrington Middle School - Station Campus today to assist any students who need support, said District 220 spokeswoman Morgan Delack.

"Our top priority is wrapping support around our students as they cope with the loss of their classmate and friend," Delack said.
