DAR Donates Books to Barrington District 220

Barrington, IL- based Signal Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated a series of books to Barrington School District 220 this fall. The books focused on the United States Constitution, the American Revolution, and Conservation. Books were delivered to the District by the Chapter’s Community Classroom Chairman Joyce Moynihan, and chapter members, Joan Kornfeind and Diane Scholten. Books were received by Becky Gill, Curriculum Director, and Melissa Byrne, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning at Barrington School District 220.

The six “Revolutionary” books were recommended by the District’s librarian and purchased for Barrington School District 220 with funds from the Chapter’s Community Classroom budget. Two books of each title were donated: “12 Incredible Facts about the Boston Tea Party” by Kristin Marciniak; “Rebecca Rides for Freedom” by Emma Carlson Berne; and “Betsy Ross and the U.S. Flag” by Danielle Smith-Llera.

The Chapter’s Conservation Chairman Jennifer Lucas donated eight Conservation books related to nature recommended by the Youth librarian. Two books of each title were donated: “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt” by Kate Messner; “Lola Plants a Garden” by Anna McQuinn; and “Growing Vegetable Soup” by Lois Ehlert. All books were labeled with the DAR logo and web address for students who want to learn more about the DAR and the local chapter.

The Signal Hill Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) was founded fifty years ago in Barrington, IL in 1972. NSDAR is a volunteer women’s service organization headquartered in Washington, DC. Due to fund-raising efforts throughout the year, the Chapter contributes financially to 501 (c) (3) organizations whose missions support that of NSDAR: historic preservation, education, patriotism, conservation, and Native Americans.

NSDAR provides more than $1.5 million in scholarships annually. It is the largest group of participants in support of Wreaths Across America. Through its various programs and initiatives, NSDAR strives to increase the awareness of men and women who achieved American independence, including those of diverse backgrounds.

Since its founding in 1890 over one million women have joined both nationally and around the world. Membership in NSDAR is open to any woman aged 18 and over who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.
