On a blustery morning, Wednesday, March 31, 2023, members of the DAR and Veterans Groups met at Barrington’s Evergreen Cemetery to honor Vietnam Veterans on National Vietnam Veterans Day.

More than 50 people gathered for the ceremony led by Signal Hill Chapter Regent Joyce Wright that included speakers from the local VFW, American Legion, and Lake Barrington Shores veterans’ organization; state and local officers from the Daughters of the American Revolution; and Barrington village officials. Over half of the attendees were veterans, most from the Vietnam Era, with two representing WWII.

Following the ceremony that included the playing of Taps by DAR member Mary Arvidson, the large group of volunteers split into five smaller ones and went throughout the cemetery placing Vietnam War flags on those graves identified as Vietnam veterans – more than forty graves in all – while saying the veteran’s name, thanking him or her for their service, and giving them a salute.
