Fire Damages Lake Julian Bait Shop in Cary

A firefighter suffered minor injuries during the blaze Sunday afternoon.

Fire officials believe a wood-burning stove caused a fire Sunday afternoon at the Lake Julian Trout Farm in Cary, according to a Cary Fire Protection District press release.

Firefighters were called to 65 S. Northwest Highway in Cary at 4:58 p.m. Sunday where they found the roof of the bait shop of the property on fire, according to the news release.

The fire was contained to the roof and attic area of the bait shop and fire officials believe the blaze started after heat from the shop's stove ignited insulation in the attic.

The blaze was extinguished within 10 minutes. At the time of the blaze, the bait shop was open for business and employees and patrons were present. No one in the shop was injured.

A firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor hand laceration. Damage estimates from the fire were not immediately available, according to the news release.

Lake Julian was closed for remainder of the day. The business has multiple storage units and also has a pond open to the public for trout fishing.

Lake Julian is located on the north side of Northwest Highway at the intersection of Jandus Cutoff and all traffic on Northwest Highway was detoured for 45 minutes during the fire. The closure was necessary as the closest fire hydrant is on the south side of Northwest Highway, according to fire officials.
