Mud Season—How to Train to Wipe Dog Paws

When you have dogs, you know that this time of year is the beginning of mud season.  Hopefully, you’ve already trained your pooch to stand still and let you towel off all four paws.  If not, here’s an easy way to begin:

  • Each time your dog comes to you for attention inside the house, have a hand towel ready to wipe one or two paws.  After you wipe a paw, give your dog a small treat.
  • Start by just wiping the outside of the paw and then wipe the bottom.  As your dog gets used to having his/her paws wiped, start gently pushing the towel between the toes & middle pad on the bottom of their feet.
Make sure that you have a towel or two, and a small treat container near the door the dog(s) come in.  If you practice this every time you pay attention to your dog, he/she will gladly accept having all four paws done when they come in from outside.

Wiping paws means that your floors will stay clean longer!
