The crash spilled nearly 20 tons of sand onto Route 14, shutting down the roadway for nearly three hours.
BARRINGTON, IL — Two passersby rescued a semi-truck driver through his windshield after his truck overturned Wednesday morning on Route 14 in Barrington, spilling nearly 20 tons of sand across the roadway.
Police and firefighters responded around 11:18 a.m. to Northwest Highway just north of Berry Road, where the truck and its dump trailer had overturned after the driver noticed the load of sand beginning to tip, according to Lake and McHenry County Scanner. The driver, a 33-year-old Chicago man, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The crash shut down Route 14 between Main Street and Lake Zurich Road for nearly three hours before all lanes reopened around 2:15 p.m. The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions, allowing a load to spill, unsafe tires and defective brakes, according to police.
