Last month chess without Borders lost an iconic leader. Mr Peter Wulff who was an educator and chess player helped develop a therapeutic method to treat anxiety through chess in disturbed adolescents. Mr Wulff ran this program at Riveredge Hospital where he was the Educational Program Director. The program was remarkably successful as he discovered that the youth learning chess were more focused, developed motivation and were less anxious. The chess program also served as a learning platform for youth who were not interested in school work. Often at the end of their hospitalization they asked Mr Wulff to take home a chess set to continue learning. A major benefit of the program was the social skills that developed among youth who felt isolated and alone. They reported to Mr Wulff that they had found a friend and a purpose and often waited to start the game for their new friend.

After his sudden death his family asked that instead of flowers Peter be remembered for his gift as an educator. Donations were made to a school in India that was struggling to survive as it provided basic education for children of migrant agricultural field workers. The school is located on the banks of the river Yamuna in Delhi, India. Any day laborers children are welcome to attend. It will be named after Peter Wulff. $2255 was donated towards maintaining this school. Some residents in Barrington, IL have already visited this school in India. The school welcomes visitors who would like to explore any creative educational projects or even volunteer there.
