“Remember Me:” Honoring 250 Years of American Heroes

The graves of the American heroes buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington don’t compose the kind of photograph that a National Cemetery provides - rows and rows of white marble headstones. While there are a few standing marble stones, many are marked with flat bronze markers.Some have no visible indication of their service at all within family plots, but their service was discovered through the research of genealogy volunteers.

In December, on Wreaths Across America Day, we remember them all with a live balsam wreath to honor their service.

And we honor these Veterans year-round by publishing profiles of their military service and post-war lives using available public documents, where they may be found. More than 500 of the 860 Veteran heroes at Evergreen are now profiled here: https://balibrary.org/local-history/1781-we-remember.
