Talent meets Service Learning
Acclaimed Artist, Mort Luby opens his home and art to support service learning projects at Chess Without Borders.
The nonprofit, Chess Without Borders is proud to introduce acclaimed artist Mort Luby who is collaborating to support youth service learning ventures. Last Christmas he used his enormous talent to help Chess Without Borders raise funds for providing ex prisoners and their families a Christmas meal. On Saturday 20th of November select guests visited Mort Luby's private gallery at his home. A $10 admission fee for this private viewing was donated towards the ex-prisoner luncheon. For the last 7 years Chess Without Borders has collaborated with Salem and Barrington United Methodist Churches to provide money and volunteers who donate funds, spend time cooking and serving Christmas meal to about 100-125 families. Time is also spent prior to the event to collect gently used toys and winter clothing to be given as gifts to this vulnerable population. Here is a video of the event held 2 years ago before COVID. The successful nature of this collaboration allows Chess Without Borders to repeat this venture. Mr Luby was inspired by youth at Chess Without Borders engaging with service learning and he has again opened his home for a private audience. The entry fee of $10 will ALL be donated towards education of children living in the slums of Delhi, India. This project was begun 11 years ago when District 220 alum Nina Sethi was volunteering as a teacher there in 2009. A few years ago youth created this video to introduce what they has accomplished:
