Batavia City Hall To Serve As Warming Center For Next Week
"Bitterly to dangerously cold temperatures" are expected through the weekend and into next week, the National Weather Service reported.
BATAVIA, IL — With wind chill temperatures expected to dip below zero over the next week, Batavia officials are turning City Hall into a warming center.
City Hall, at 100 N. Island Ave., will serve as a place for people in need of a safe, heated space starting at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 until noon Jan. 17. Staff won't be able to provide sleeping accommodations, dedicate hygiene or washing facilities, or refrigerators for food storage.
Visitors should check in at the front desk of the Batavia Police Department upon arrival.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for the same timeframe the warming center will be open.
Wintry weather will continue after the winter storm ends Saturday, as "bitterly to dangerously cold temperatures" are expected through the weekend and into next week, the National Weather Service reported.

The cold will begin Saturday night through Tuesday night, and wind chills as low as 30 below zero are possible. At those wind chills, frostbite on exposed skin can happen in as little as 15 to 30 minutes, according to the weather service.
Temperatures aren't expected to rise out of the single digits. The high for the day on Sunday and Monday is 6 degrees, and the high for the day on Tuesday is 5. There will be a slight warm-up on Wednesday, but temperatures will still be below normal for the rest of the week, the weather service said.
