Controversial Campana Building Project Pulled By Developers
The developers said they did not believe there would be enough support for the proposed apartment project.

BATAVIA, IL — The proposed plan to fill Batavia's Campana Building with 80 apartments has been taken off the table by its developers, Evergreen Real Estate Group. The announcement comes just days before the proposal was set to be up for debate with the Batavia Village Council.
The proposal to build 80 units inside the historic building was first brought to the village in May 2017. In mid-September, the City Council Committee on the Whole passed the proposal along with a positive recommendation.
In the interim, the proposal, which included affordable housing, met with resistance from many residents. Those opposing the project cited proposed project's impact on traffic, parking, and more than a dozen businesses that currently occupy the Campana Building.

As a result of the public outcry, the initial vote was postponed in October and board review was continued twice, with the most recent date scheduled for Monday.
The Village of Batavia website announced Friday that developers had formally withdrawn the proposal.
