Quilts Display Patriotism in Batavia

The 2011 Quilt & Textile Show in Batavia this weekend paid tribute to the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation.

Local residents and visitors alike got in touch with their sewing side this past weekend at the fifth annual Quilt and Textile Show in Batavia.

About 200 historical and contemporary quilts were on hand at the event, which took place inside at the , 14 N. Van Buren St. Over 1,000 people were in attendance, said Chris Winter, curator.

The handiwork included Lois Jarvis' "Ground Zero" quilt, created following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The quilt includes a face in each of its 621 diamonds and represents a quarter of the people who died at the World Trade Center site, according to Jarvis.

Quilt vendors from all over the Chicago area participated in the show, which helps to fund the Batavia Depot Museum’s new programs and exhibits.

“It’s more than just a Batavia show,” Winter said. The event draws people from all over northern Illinois and even vendors and quilts from Michigan and Wisconsin.
