Self-Inflicted Gunshot Killed Man Found Near Batavia School

The 22-year-old man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Kane County Coroner.

BATAVIA, IL — A self-inflicted gunshot wound claimed the life of a Batavia man whose body was found near HC Storm Elementary School Saturday, according to the Kane County Coroner's Office. Robert Napierkowski, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene after police responded to a report of a man who was "armed" and "despondent."

Napierkowski's body was later discovered in a wooded are in the 300 block of N. Van Nortwick Avenue, according to police.

The incident began to unfold around 6:20 p.m. when Batavia Police initially received a report about a suicidal person with a firearm. The Kane County SWAT team was also called out to assist with the response before Napierkowski was found deceased.

Police subsequently launched an investigation into Napierkowski's death. The Kane County Coroner's office said in a news release Tuesday that it was awaiting a toxicology report.
