Vanguard Gifted Academy Announces Student Participation in Art Contest
Students participated in the National Everyday Heroes Art Competition

Vanguard Gifted Academy is proud to announce its continued participation in the Junior Artists National Kids Art Competition, bringing student learning and creativity to a nationwide audience. Following a successful submission cycle last spring that resulted in a Vanguard student becoming a published artist, current students are now translating their classroom explorations of community roles into artistic submissions for this fall's "Everyday Heroes" contest.
The academy’s journey with Junior Artists began last academic year during a comprehensive STREAM unit. Under the guidance of educator Mrs. McCarney, early elementary students studied the geography and natural wonder of Mount Rainier, eventually creating original paintings of the mountain to submit to the magazine's "Beauty and Inspiration" competition. One of those students was selected for publication in the inaugural April 2026 issue of Junior Artists magazine.
"To have one of our students recognized as a published artist is an incredible milestone," said Amy Trujillo, Head of School at Vanguard Gifted Academy. "What a thing to be able to say. What our students are learning and creating goes beyond our school walls. It is part of something bigger, allowing them to share their unique perspectives with the world."

This year, Vanguard students are diving into a curriculum centered on the concept of community and the vital roles people play within it. The Junior Artists "Everyday Heroes" competition theme seamlessly aligns with this focus, prompting students to identify and honor individuals whose work, care, and dedication make a difference.
The open-ended nature of the prompt allows Vanguard’s gifted learners to approach the concept of a "hero" through their own creative lenses. Initial student submissions for this year's contest reflect a wide and imaginative interpretation of dedication and impact, featuring vibrant pieces hand-drawn with acrylic markers depicting an astronaut, a beekeeper, and cultural icon Michael Jackson.

By integrating visual arts into core academic explorations, Vanguard Gifted Academy continues to provide a platform for highly capable learners to process complex ideas, express their individuality, and connect their classroom knowledge to the broader global community.
Selected entries for the "Everyday Heroes" competition will be featured in an upcoming issue of Junior Artists magazine, with all participants receiving digital certificates to honor their creative efforts.
